David R. Friend, CONRAD, USA

David R. FriendDr. Friend is Director, Product Development and Research Associate Professor at CONRAD, which is a division of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department at Eastern Virginia Medical School.  He is responsible for nonclinical and product development of topically applied formulations designed to prevent transmission of HIV-1 (or other sexually transmitted infections) and/or prevent unintended pregnancies.  He is responsible for the manufacturing of the tenofovir gel currently in a Phase III clinical trial (FACTS 001).  In addition, Dr. Friend directs development of intravaginal rings and fast-dissolve vaginal tablets for local administration of antiviral drugs.  He also is working on novel multipurpose prevention technologies.
